If you’re a homeowner, use our troubleshooting guide to rule out easy fixes.
If your pool’s water levels are high enough and your skimmer and basket aren’t full, a leak is probably behind your pump sucking air.
O-ring failures on your pump or union are the most likely culprits, followed by clogged intake lines.
A pool technician can check for blockages and remove any damaged parts, which can then be brought to our workshop for repairs.
A pump basket failing to fill with water can lead to a host of problems – including destroying the mechanical seal.
Luckily, there’s normally an easy fix: prime your pump.
If your pump is leaking water (rather than having air leak in), it’s probably caused by a failing mechanical seal.
Once the mechanical seal fails completely, water will rush into the pump motor and destroy it.
Get a technician out as quickly as possible to avoid an expensive motor replacement.
They’ll remove your pump and bring it into our workshop to be repaired.
Your pump not turning on or turning on and off could be caused by everything from a faulty capacitor to rodent-chewed wires.
Check your breakers and pump timer first, then call a qualified technician for assistance.
If the problem is caused by your pump’s motor, get your pool technician to bring the part into our workshop for a repair.
Different noises indicate different issues.
Screeching or rough tumbling sounds could be the result of faulty bearings (they’ll often be accompanied by loud vibrations).
Humming sounds and power issues normally mean your impeller is clogged or your capacitor has failed.
If your pump is pulsing or surging, it’s probably caused by air intake (see ‘The pump is sucking air.’).
Remove the pump and bring into our workshop for a diagnosis or get a pool technician to do it for you.
A low flow rate is normally caused by debris in the basket or impeller.
Check both then call a pool technician if the flow rate still hasn’t returned to normal.
‘It was a simple capacitator swap, but the technician said the whole pump needed replacing.’

A full pump replacement shouldn’t be your first option – but, sometimes, it’s the right choice.
If a pump is at the end of its life, upgrading can be faster, cheaper and easier.
Some pump manufacturers have also discontinued parts for older models, which can make a repair more expensive than it should be.
And what if that pump is an outdated or inefficient model?
Switching to a variable-speed model can save literally hundreds a year in energy costs.
As agents for market-leading brands, we’ll help you find a pump that’s right for your pool.
Building a pool?
Finding the right pump matters.
It needs to match the pool’s capacity, piping, and water treatment, be suitable for South East Queensland’s long, hot summers, and run quietly with minimal maintenance – all within budget.
Then it needs to be programmed correctly, filtering your water fast enough to prevent algae and pathogens from breeding.
It’s why pool builders across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and Toowoomba work with us.
Because cheap and fast isn’t good enough when it comes to water safety.
If you’re building a new pool, get in touch with us to find out how we can help with pump selection and supply.
Our workshop is located at 490 Scottsdale Drive in Varsity Lakes. We support tradies and homeowners across Queensland and northern New South Wales with new pumps and repairs, but we don’t do callouts or site visits.
We’re authorised warranty agents for pumps from Pool Pro, Waterco, Pentair, Zodiac, AstralPool, Reefe Pumps, and Continental Water. If your pool part is from one of those brands, our technicians can work on it without compromising your warranty.
Many of our customers find that Pentair pumps like the IntelliFlo VS (best for efficiency), the WhisperFlo, and the SuperFlo VST (designed for smaller pools) deliver the best value for money. Reefe pumps are high-durability workhorses that are popular with our trade clients.
The best time to run your pool pump depends on a lot of different factors. As a generalisation, it’s best to run a single- or 2-speed pump at night. You’ll save on electricity costs and your chlorine won’t be degraded by UV radiation from the sun, which means it’ll sanitise your pool more effectively. Some people recommend running your pump during the day to reduce the risk of algal blooms, but, normally, maintaining a good chemical balance is the best way to keep your water clean.
Variable-speed pumps are a different story. Because they’re designed to run continuously, a pool technician can help you set the right RPM ratios based on your pool’s size, your flow rate, and your pump’s efficiency.
The key is to make sure your water is being turned over at least twice per 24 hours. Keep in mind that one turnover doesn’t equal 100% filtration – because liquids don’t disperse evenly, you’ll only filter around 63% of your pool’s water (you would need 7 turnovers to filter 99.9%). Your pool technician can help you set turnover rates that will keep contaminants and pathogens at safe levels.
Yes, a variable-speed (VS) pool pump is definitely worth it. A VS pump can be programmed to run at lower speeds for longer, which reduces total power consumption significantly (and your electricity bill). Its motor is also totally enclosed. Unlike single- and 2-speed motors, which require air intake that exposes the engine to dust and other particles, a VS pump is fan-cooled, improving motor longevity.
Just as importantly, a VS pump’s longer running times means it doesn’t need to operate at high RPMs for as long. That means you or your client will benefit from less noise – which matters if any bedrooms are near the pool.
The average pool pump lasts 8–12 years. Keep in mind that pump type, manufacturer and model, and maintenance all play a big role in determining longevity.
