Robot pool cleaners make maintenance easy—until they stop doing their job. If yours is getting stuck, losing power, or leaving debris behind, there’s usually a simple reason. Here’s how to troubleshoot the most common robot pool cleaner problems and get your cleaner back to work fast.
A robot failing to turn on could be caused by an issue with the power outlet the control box is plugged into.
Normally, though, total failure to start is the result of cable damage (either to the control box or the cord itself).
If you have a cordless model, it could also be affected by an aged or degraded battery.
Once you’ve ruled out a supply-side power issue and cable kinks, bring your robot and its control box into our workshop for a strip-and-quote diagnosis.
Most incomplete cycles are caused by clogged filters or impellers.
Follow your robot’s manual for advice on removing the filters – you should be cleaning them at the end of each cycle anyway.
Hair clogging an impeller can also cause issues with operation.
If you aren’t sure how to access your impeller, bring your robot into our workshop and we’ll check it on the spot.
Unbalanced pool water can lead to algae on your walls and your robot’s scrubbers, which can make wall-climbing difficult.
Run a finger over your walls to see whether they feel slippery.
(If they do, visit our chemical troubleshooting guide for help.)
A full filter bag, failure to submerge properly, worn tracks, and even certain clean settings can also stop your robot from climbing.
Still need help?
Bring both your robot and your control unit into our Varsity Lakes workshop.
Check your scrubbers, filters, and filter bag first – clean them or replace them with new parts as needed.
Incomplete or ineffective cleaning can also be caused by certain cycle settings, the placement of your robot in your pool, and obstacles in the pool (including very short steps).
Your robot’s pump or impeller could also be the problem.
If you think that’s the case, don’t try to take your robot apart yourself – bring it to a workshop like us to preserve your warranty.
When you use your robot, lower it slowly into the water, hold it underwater until the bubbles stop, and then place it gently on the pool floor.
If it’s still floating off the bottom of the pool, one of the seals might have failed, causing internal water leaks.
Bring it into a repair workshop like us as quickly as possible to avoid damaging the motor and other expensive components.
Get Your Pool Robot Cleaning Again
Even the best robotic pool cleaners need repairing.
Sometimes, that can be as simple as a track swap or a drive belt replacement – the kind of ongoing maintenance that any vehicle needs.
But your robot can also be affected by more serious issues, like a damaged electrical connection, leaking seals, or a cracked housing.
As certified warranty agents for leading manufacturers like Waterco and Pentair, we can help get your or your client’s robot back where it belongs: scrubbing the walls and floors of your pool.
Bring your robot into our workshop for a diagnosis and robot pool cleaner repairs, or get in touch with us to ask about lead times on genuine OEM parts.

Whether a robotic pool cleaner is ‘worth it’ depends on your personal financial situation. What’s more valuable: your time or your money? If you’re happy to spend each weekend cleaning your pool walls and brushing up any debris a suction-side cleaner misses, then you probably don’t need a robot.
On the other hand, if you prefer a hands-off approach to pool maintenance, a robot is almost certainly worth it. Because robots operate autonomously, your skimmer will operate at full suction, which means it will collect surface-level debris more effectively. A robot can also handle debris like small stones that a vacuum can’t. All you need to do is place it into your pool every 3 to 4 days, remove it when it’s finished cleaning, and bring it into a workshop like us every 12 months for a service.
Pool cleaners are like anything else: you get what you pay for. Suction cleaners (that is, Kreepy Krauly-type vacuums) are the cheapest and most widely used type of cleaner. They’re good at sucking up small particles like sand and dirt, but can miss leaves and may get clogged by larger debris. They also rely on suction routed from your skimmer, which can make surface-level skimming less effective.
Pressure cleaners are more effective than suction vacuums, but also cost more and require a standalone pump to run (which you’ll need an electrician to install).
Robots are the most expensive type of pool cleaner. But they’re also more effective, more energy-efficient, and easier to deploy than either suction or pressure cleaners. All you need is a GPO to plug in the control box and an annual service to keep it running smoothly.
Yes, we do. We’re a one-stop shop for all pool-related repairs and replacements. If your pool cleaner isn’t working properly, bring it into our Varsity Lakes workshop for a diagnosis.
Most robotic cleaners have a warranty period of 2 to 3 years on their motor blocks and one year on wearable parts. With the right maintenance, though, a high-quality robot from brands like AstralPool and Waterco can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years before it needs to be replaced.
